bio
Brian Jones is originally from Somerset, KY and got his start in volleyball by playing in local leagues and tournaments around the area. While attending Morehead State University, he played club volleyball for the men’s team. After moving to Lexington, KY to do his student teaching he started his coaching career at Paul Laurence Dunbar as both a volunteer assistant and then eventually the assistant coach. After his two year tenure at PLD he left to be the assistant coach at Woodford County in 2004. The following year he took over the program, resulting in his first head coaching position. In his four year stint in the Lexington area, Jones racked up three District Championships, and one Region Title.
While he loved the Lexington area he left to coach a very talented group of young ladies at North Oldham High School. While coaching at NOVB for nine years he tallied up four 29th District Championships, three Region 8 Titles, one KHSAA State Tournament first round appearance, two KHSAA State Tournament Semi-Final appearances, and was named Region 8 Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2013.
During his time at NOVB he also coached with MAVA for three years. His biggest accolade during those three years was while assistant coaching a talented group of 14 year old’s to a 5th place finish in the Open Division at AAU Nationals.
Jones then left the Louisville area to get his feet wet on the college level. He found his home for the next two years at Union College in Barbourville, KY as the assistant coach while working on his Master’s Degree in Education. In his two years at Union he gained valuable knowledge on the recruiting process and also helped lead the team to their first NAIA Nationals appearance since 2010. He was named the 2015 Appalachian Athletic Conference, and AVCA NAIA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. His time at Union College also allowed him to coach collegiate camps with both the University of Tennessee and Kentucky.
Jones left Union College in 2016 after finishing his educational requirements and found his way back into the classroom. While he hasn’t been coaching a team the past four years he has worked closely with UK during their summer camps. He’s looking forward to working with them again this summer and hopes to venture to both UNC and Oklahoma as well. On top of this Jones has also hosted elite, all-skills, and high school camps in both the Southern Kentucky area and Lexington.
We at MAVA are very excited to have Jones back in our gym. His knowledge of recruiting, practice and game plans, and his 18 years as a teacher is a big asset to our organization.
